Our Ladye Star of the Sea

Highlighting the heritage of this historic church in Royal Greenwich, London, through a new website with a fresh brand and striking imagery.

Having seen our work for St Peter’s in Woolwich, Father Kevin Robinson and his wife Frances approached us to create a new website to better communicate the church’s cultural value. We developed a new identity, website, and film to showcase the architectural heritage of this Wardell-designed church with its Pugin interiors. The work aims to leverage funding from cultural bodies for restoration, while engaging the wider community through greater access to the church’s history and spaces.

Website design and build

The new website structure and design was developed to allow the client greater control over their content, and with the ability to grow the website's content to suit their needs. Working with the steering group, we established the priorities of content, messaging and overall look and feel. Through detailed sessions of reviewing functionality and advising on content creation, the team was able to work closely together and complete the project on schedule and to budget.

Our remit included developing new content, photography, graphics and a fresh brand identity.

“We needed a new church website and Fit Creative were highly recommended to us. They clearly understood what was needed and, with the advantage of their local knowledge and eye for details, brought our attention to features of the church which had otherwise passed us by. This made for an enjoyable project all round. Engaging images draw visitors in to find information about what goes on at the church and its heritage in a user friendly-way. The team helpfully guided us in face-to-face meetings and contact throughout the build so that we are able to maintain and update the website ourselves. We now have a website that we are very proud of and is worthy of our beautiful church.”

New identity

As part of our process of developing the structure and content needs of the website, we gathered an understanding of what makes the church so important to Greenwich heritage, and this helped inform the new identity, used to brand the new website.

The symbol of Mary, the patron saint of the church, originally designed by Pugin and immortalised in various interior elements, was redrawn and set within the quatrofoil shape, a commonly used symbol within Gothic architecture.

The new identity has been uniformly rolled out across all social channels and church communication, creating a consistent new brand.

Homepage film

To bring the church to life, with its very tall spire and striking details, we have created a film to show on the homepage. We edited together drone footage created by the architect to track the remedial works required for the building, resulting in a stunning visual highlight of the architecture and interior.

New photography and imagery

With such a striking and beautiful building both externally and internally, part of our remit was to capture it in images that bring the website to life. Being locally placed, we were able to visit the church several times to accommodate different weather and lighting and capture stunning imagery.

Part of the new brand identity utilises elements from across the interiors of the church design to create supporting pattern graphics.
